Jonathan Rowden
Saxophone Lessons

Jonathan Rowden is a jazz saxophonist and composer in Los Angeles, and is described as a unique new talent who has exploded into the diverse Los Angeles creative music scene. Jonathan strives for a vision of improvised music that spans beyond traditional genres under the jazz umbrella, and explores new territory, drawing from his eclectic taste and background in classical, pop, rock, jazz, and many styles in-between. His melodic lyricism, rhythmic acuity, and a fiery passion for the experiment make him a kindred voice to the listener, and his unique, participatory approach to group improvisation takes listeners on a journey beyond listening, and into truly engaging in the moment.

His debut album "Becoming" to be released May 27th, 2014 was recorded at the legendary Sunset Sound in Hollywood CA, and according to Gary Fukushima of LA Weekly is " intentional flight path through extreme hard-hitting highs and sublime lows, undergirded with meticulous attention to texture and color, resulting in a satisfying emotional catharsis at its conclusion..."

He received his Master's in jazz performance at CSU Fullerton under Grammy-Winning artist Bill Cunliffe, and studied classically under internationally-renowned saxophonist/pedagogue Jim Rötter of the LA Philharmonic. While there he was the two year recipient of the Friends of Jazz Scholarship and Graduate Assistant for the jazz studies department, and won numerous awards and scholarships throughout his college career. He currently serves as an adjunct faculty member at Mount San Antonio Community College and so far in 2014 has been a featured guest artist at California State University Fullerton, Saddleback College, and many high schools in the Orange County area. He is also a published educational writer with the internationally acclaimed jazz publication, Downbeat Magazine.

"The Los Angeles jazz scene has no shortage of prodigious talent; on any given night throughout the sprawling landscape that makes up the greater Los Angeles area there is always some exciting happening or unique event - the tenor saxophonist Jonathan Rowden definitely belongs to this society.”

“What a terrific set, the first “song” lasted about 40 minutes...[they] being able to move seamlessly in and out of different more structured compositions using free improvisation. I was amazed...and felt no ache of time passing, but instead rode along the trip with them, in total happiness!” -
